Dear Parents and Educators:
I am delighted to introduce you to the National Society for the Gifted
and Talented. I am convinced that this organization will have a significant
impact on the lives of our country’s most able young people. The
recognition, resources, and opportunities that the Society offers these
remarkable students will play an important role in their development.
As a psychologist and educator, I know well how our young people need
to be nurtured, supported, and challenged in order for them to soar to
the heights that their abilities indicate. As a parent of gifted children,
I know first hand the challenges of raising high ability children and
appreciate how important resources and support are for parents. We know
sadly that when these children are not given the opportunities to advance,
excel, and flourish, they can easily fall by the wayside and never reach
their potential.
NSGT is excited to work in partnership with families, educators, foundations,
and corporations in order to create the resources necessary to meet the
needs of these terrific young people. One component is not sufficient,
we need to create collaborations among a number of interested and concerned
entities to provide these students withthe opportunities that they need.
It is heartening that the NSGT has already gotten support from the Educational
Testing Service; the Summer Institute for the Gifted and its original parent organization,
the American Institute for Foreign Study; Renaissance Learning Inc.;
Renzulli Learning Systems; and the Carmel Hill Foundation. We
are seeking additional support from foundations and corporations who want
to be part of this exciting work.
I am honored to be the Chair of the Board of NSGT and to be able to service
these remarkable students and their families. These young people represent
our nation’s future leaders, educators, and professionals, who will
insure the strength of our country. They need our help and support, and
I am delighted that we have a powerful way to provide that for them through
the NSGT.
Sincerely,
Arie L. Nettles, Ph.D., Chair
